The Science Behind the Northern Lights
The Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, occur when charged particles from the Sun hit the Earth’s atmosphere.
These particles, carried by solar winds, collide with gases like oxygen and nitrogen. The energy from these collisions releases colorful light—most often green, red, or purple. The Earths Magnetic field also heavily influences Aurora.
The strength and frequency of Auroras depend on the solar cycle, an 11-year pattern in which the Sun’s magnetic field reverses. During this period, solar activity—such as flares and coronal mass ejections—increases.
We are currently in a phase called the solar maximum (2024–2026), when Aurora activity is at its strongest across Canada.
When to See the Northern Lights
The Aurora season at Muncho Lake runs from late August through April, with the clearest skies between New Year’s and March. Our guide staff has picked prime aurora dates to coincide with dark skies.
Equinox Viewing: March and September often produce stronger Auroras due to the earths magnetic field, called the Russell–McPherron Effect.
Winter Viewing: From January to February, cold temperatures, low humidity, and long nights provide excellent Aurora viewing in Canada and a great chance for night photography.
The best time to view the Northern Lights at muncho is between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m., when the sky is darkest.
